Camera Work Rubrics
The following camera rubric identifies characteristics that I consider to be the most significant not just to me, but to professionals. Read carefully. Points are awarded based on which category your work falls under. If you find yourself achieving less than what you desire, then make the opportunity to see me and we can discuss.

* Mostly a profile shot, barely catching both eyes of the person or the person is looking at the camera (unless the purpose is to have them address the camera)
* Camera is not at eye-level with the person
* Interviewee and interviewer are not at the same eye-level.
* Uninteresting background not particularly relevant to the subject
* Background is square with the camera creating a flat, 2D image
* Use of same background for multiple interviews
* Person is positioned too close to the background such as a wall
* Only ambient light is used.
* Mostly overexposed
* Underexposed with no additional lighting.
* Background is much brighter than the subject in the foreground
* Needs proper white balance
* Subject is seen holding the microphone
* Reporter's hand is seen holding the microphone because shot is too wide.
* Leadspace is not alternated between multiple interview shots.

* Lighting is adequate - used additional lighting, but is either too bright, contains harsh shadows or is still underexposed
* Lighting is mostly behind the camera
* Colours are reproduced more or less accurately.
* Mostly, interviewee and interviewer are at the same eye-level.
* Camera is mostly at eye-level with the person
* Some depth to the background so it's not as 2D-ish.
* Leadspace is sometimes alternated between multiple interview shots.

* Excellent composition with the camera at an angle that shows some depth to the background
* Composition may vary for responses to different questions
* Use of background that is relevant to the topic

* Too much wind noise entering the mic
* Usually there is some distortion in the audio from over-modulation
* Obvious use of camera boom mic to record interviews or stand-ups
* Microphone for interviews is held too far away for adequate sound quality
* Ambient noise often punctuated with chatter from the reporter and/or photographer
* Sound sometimes unclear due to low voices, overly loud ambient noise
* Too much wind noise entering the mic
* Usually there is some distortion in the audio from over-modulation
* Obvious use of camera boom mic to record interviews or stand-ups
* Microphone for interviews is held too far away for adequate sound quality
* Ambient noise often punctuated with chatter from the reporter and/or photographer
Proficient Range

* Audio levels are mostly consistent and very little distortion
* Some wind noise but not distracting much from voices or the usual ambient noise.
