Camera Work Rubrics

The following camera rubric identifies characteristics that I consider to be the most significant not just to me, but to professionals. Read carefully. Points are awarded based on which category your work falls under. If you find yourself achieving less than what you desire, then make the opportunity to see me and we can discuss.

Video B-roll
Unsatisfactory (1-6.9)
* Sometimes in focus
* Sometimes steady
* Excessive camera movement (panning, zooming)
*Lacks sequences
*Lacks depth in shots or creative angles
* Only ambient light is used and many shots are either overexposed or underexposed
* Most shots need proper white balance
Proficient Range 
* Usually in focus
* Usually steady
* Pans and zooms are limited and usually purposeful
* Composition usually follows Rule of Thirds
* Some use of sequences
* Some depth in shots and some creativity
* Additional lighting is used as necessary
* Most scenes have sufficient lighting to tell what's happening
* Some shots need proper white balance

Exemplary (9-10)
* Always in focus (unless purposefully not)
* Always steady (unless purposefully not)
* Camera moves show purpose and provide impact
* Variety of angles used to develop dynamic sequences
* Varied composition based on Rule of Thirds to convey depth and creativity
* All shots have sufficient lighting to see the action easily
* All shots properly white balanced and the colours are vivid
* Additional lighting is used to eliminate shadows and glares, or the lighting is innovative to create atmosphere or moods
Video Interview
Unsatisfactory (1-6.9)
*Soft focus or auto-focus keeps shifting the focus
* Sometimes steady
* Composition contains too much headroom or lack of noseroom (leadspace)
* Mostly a profile shot,  barely catching both eyes of the person or the person is looking at the camera (unless the purpose is to have them address the camera)
* Camera is not at eye-level with the person
* Interviewee and interviewer are not at the same eye-level.
* Uninteresting background not particularly relevant to the subject
* Background is square with the camera creating a flat, 2D image
* Use of same background for multiple interviews
* Person is positioned too close to the background such as a wall
* Only ambient light is used.
* Mostly overexposed
* Underexposed with no additional lighting.
* Background is much brighter than the subject in the foreground
* Needs proper white balance
* Subject is seen holding the microphone
* Reporter's hand is seen holding the microphone because shot is too wide.
* Leadspace is not alternated between multiple interview shots.
* The same background is used in multiple interviews.

Proficient Range 
* Usually in focus
* Usually steady (movement should have purpose)
* Composition mostly 3/4 profile with adequate headroom and noseroom
* Background somewhat relevant to the topic and sometimes changes between interviews
* The microphone is visible in the shot
* Subject is not too close to the background
* Lighting is adequate - used additional lighting, but is either too bright, contains harsh shadows or is still underexposed
* Lighting is mostly behind the camera
* Colours are reproduced more or less accurately.
* Mostly, interviewee and interviewer are at the same eye-level.
* Camera is mostly at eye-level with the person
* Some depth to the background so it's not as 2D-ish.
* Leadspace is sometimes alternated between multiple interview shots.

    Exemplary (9-10)
* Always in focus
* Always steady
* Excellent composition with the camera at an angle that shows some depth to the background
* Composition may vary for responses to different questions
* Use of background that is relevant to the topic
* Use of alternating leadpsace between multiple interviews.
* Background always unique to each interview
* Subject is well-lit with soft shadows (unless for more dramatic effect done purposefully
* Camera always at eye-level with the person
* Reporter always at eye-level with the person
* Microphone is not visible in the shot

Unsatisfactory (1-6.9)
* Sound sometimes unclear due to low voices, overly loud ambient noise
* Too much wind noise entering the mic
* Usually there is some distortion in the audio from over-modulation
* Obvious use of camera boom mic to record interviews or stand-ups
* Microphone for interviews is held too far away for adequate sound quality
* Ambient noise often punctuated with chatter from the reporter and/or photographer
Proficient Range 
* Sound usually clear with no unintended ambient noise
* Audio levels are mostly consistent and very little distortion
* Some wind noise but not distracting much from voices or the usual ambient noise.
Exemplary (9-10)
* Sound always clear and no distortion
* Ambient noise is always appropriate and helps carry the story
* No wind noise unless purposefully done
