The Canon VIXIA HF G40

Inserting the SD Card

Use SDHC cards with a Speed Class 6 or higher. You won't be able to record video with any card that is less than a Class 6.

The card needs to be initialised before using it for the first time. Recording times vary between size of card and the format that is used. At 1920 x 1080 resolution using either AVCHD or MP4 and recording at 35 Mbps:

  • 8 GB will give you about 30 minutes of recording
  • 16 GB between 1 hour and 1 hour 15 min.
  • 32 GB between 2 hours and 2 hrs. 30 min.
  • 64 GB between 4 and 5 hours recording

Inserting the Card

Make sure the camera is turned off before inserting or removing a card. The ON/OFF button is located on top of the camera and can be used to switch between two operation modes: CAMERA for recording and MEDIA mode for playback.

  • Open the LCD panel
  • Open the memory card slot cover and insert the card with the label facing towards the lens until it clicks.
  • Close the card slot cover.
To remove the card:
Press the card once to release it and then pull it out of
the slot.

Do not disconnect the power source when the card is being accessed by the camera.

Initializing the Memory Card

When using media cards for the first time, you will need to initialise or format them to the camera. Initialising will permanently erase all data that's on the card. It will be impossible to retrieve any prior recordings. It's considered best practice at the end of every shoot to copy all media off the card onto a portable hard drive.

  • Turn on the camera
  • On the LCD panel, press the FUNC and then MENU
  • Select the film reel icon to open up the media settings.
  • Scroll down to the Initialize SD setting. Touch the orange bar to the right.
  • Select the relevant memory card and then press Initialize.
